In Monday’s Notes from the Road, we reflected on this comment from, the unsuspectingly wise, Silent Bob:
“Do it for yourself first and foremost.”
Once we make our way around the philosophical argument as to why we should do our art, then we have to contend with, "How?”
How do we “do it for ourselves?”
Kristin says we need to do two things:
1. Follow our curiosity and make things we want to make for no reason other than that we want to make them.
2. Sell things. Things we make or our time or both. The relationship between 1 and 2 isn't necessarily direct or linear.
The relationship between creator and marketer is the one we’re always contending with. No matter what your genre, you’re always advocating for your project, your vision, your idea. And even if your project is unrelated to earning money, there is often the desire to share it, to bring it to someone who might care. We create and we share and as we do we remember that everything we make doesn’t have to be fit for sale. It might just be a thing you need to make — and that’s great.
