For years, I’ve mocked the digital nomads who glamorized working from the beach. Namely, because the glare from the sun on your computer makes it impossible. And the sand gets in everything. And the wind blows your papers around. And why would you want to be on your computer when you could be staring out into some beautiful vista?
Today, I am writing you from the beach.
OK, fine, I’m in my hotel room overlooking the beach. And frankly, I’m so happy to be on my computer here with you. Not because I’m a workaholic who wants to get martyr points for not enjoying myself - but the opposite. I want points for investing in what I enjoy, at the expense of the opinion of others.
I enjoy reading, writing, air conditioning, quiet, and making fun of
. I have spent my morning “at the beach” doing each of those things.Joy Ride comes out on Fridays, a day when we’re supposed to rest, wind down, and relax. And you should do those things. I support that. I also support pleasure. Which is not always restful or without effort. And that’s ok too.
I spent this week talking to Brainstorm Roadies about their experiences on the Road (I’ll tell you more about that later) and all of us had something in common: We WANT to do this work.
It’s work, but it’s also pleasure.
The line between the two is blurry when you’re talking about your Dream Project. There is effort expended, and discipline required, but it’s from a place of genuine desire instead of resentment or obligation. I think that matters.
To that end, I’m going to go finish listening to Britney’s memoir and staring at this view. Not because I need to but because I believe a little frivolity makes the work better.

PS: Kristin does not condone signing professional things with XO, which is precisely why I have to do it.
See you next week ;)
